Two Pieced Pieces of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Unusual Pattern
early twentieth century
22" x 18 1/2", 56 cm x 47 cm
and
45" x 6 1/4", 114.5 cm x 16 cm
Shown here are two pieces of indigo dyed katazome cloth--each piece is hand stitched from more than one piece of cloth.
The pattern is interesting. It shows traditional well covers--the tic-tac-toe design--with stylized paulownia flowers. Both these motifs are often seen in design and on textiles but in this case the stylized pauwlonia flowers are rendered in a fairly original way.
The blue blank areas seen on the two pieces are from the end of the bolt of cloth from which there pieces were cut.
Charming and usable in design and craft projects.
