An Unusual White Boro Panel: Layered Cottons
mid twentieth century
66" x 12 1/4", 167.5 cm x 31 cm
This boro is very unusual because it is made entirely of white colored cotton pieces. It is beautiful in its monochrome tonality, and it has a kind of "ghostly" quality.
It is about three layers thick and is composed of many long patches of white cotton. The layering of the patches is super subtle and the overall effect offers the viewer a soft, hand made texture.
Highlighted in the accompanying photographs is one side of the panel which was taken from a futon cover; shown is what would have been the proper inside of the futon cover. The reverse of this piece shows ingrained dirt from years of wear, and even though this piece was washed to bring out its natural whites, this ground in dirt did not come out.
A gorgeously simple and esoteric length of cloth, this is certainly a piece for a boro collector.
