An Old Zokin or Dust Rag: Jersey and Black Sashiko

mid twentieth century

Zokin are traditional Japanese dustrags which are almost always made from layered and sashiko stitched scraps of cloth.

This is a handsome zokin which is sewn from recycled, thick white jersey material which was culled from some kind of pullover or underwear. The sashiko stitching on the cloth is done in black threads and is well executed.

As is obvious from looking at the attached photos the white cotton jersey material is colored and splotched by yellowing and staining from use and age.

A lovely and interesting-looking old zokin.
