An Itajime Shibori Diaper: Small Snow Flowers on Gauzy Cotton
mid twentieth century
24" x 12 3/4", 61 cm x 32.5 cm
This indigo dyed cotton cloth measures as 24" or 61 cm in length, when in reality it is twice that since this is length of cotton has been stitched as a "tube," short end to short end.
It is a diaper and is dyed in the itajime shibori or clamp dyed method.
The cotton would have been folded in a series of triangular folds, then clamped, and then the edges would have been dyed. The result is this field of small-sized blue, six pointed "flowers" which are sparsely arranged on a white ground.
This machine stitched itajime shibori diaper in good, used condition with a few very, very small dots of staining from age.
