An Itajime Shibori Diaper: Boldly Patterned
$35.00 USD
mid twentieth century
49" x 12 1/2", 124.5 cm x 31.5 cm
This supple, lightweight--almost gauzy--cotton cloth seems as yet unused. It is the kind of cloth used to make traditional Japanese diapers in the early to mid twentieth century. It is dyed in the itajime shibori or clamp dyed method.
To create this grid pattern the cotton would have been folded, then clamped, and then the edges would have been dyed. The result is this deep indigo dyed squared pattern.
The indigo color is rich in tone and is set deeply into the cloth--this good-sized length is in fair to good condition.
Really lovely color.
