An Indigo Dyed Cotton Sashiko Bag: Traditional Pouch
early twentieth century
19" x 11 1/2", 48.25 cm x 29 cm
This is a simply constructed and designed hand stitched, indigo dyed cotton bag which is traditional in design.
Bags of this type were common in old Japan and were used for a variety of purposes.
This bag is lined with the same cotton as the exterior, an indigo dyed cotton. There is a small tab on the one side of the bag where a rope or twine tie would have been attached.
There is the obvious sashiko stitched kanji or Chinese character on the front of the bag: on it there are some rust-colored stains visible which also bleed onto the indigo cotton, but the stains are not as visible there as on the white cotton sashiko thread.
A charming old cotton bag in good, used condition.
