An Elegantly Woven Length of Cotton: Stripes and Kasuri Plaid
early twentieth century
61 1/2" x 13 1/4", 156 cm x 33.5 cm
This length of hand woven cotton is made using hand spun yarns. This fact in combination with the elegant and inventive pattern--a combination of stripes and kasuri plaid--makes for a beautiful length of old cloth.
In person the indigo tones of this length are rich and velvety. The wide areas of striping contrasted by the tight squares of intersecting white lines makes for an exciting, unexpected design which is one of the reasons we love Japanese folk textiles: there are myriad design surprises to be found.
This piece was taken from a futon cover. The design is elegant, the color is rich and the hand spun yarns make for a gorgeous, woven length.
Just beautiful.
