An Arashi Shibori Yukata: Desirable "Storm" Pattern
early twentieth century
shoulder to hem x sleeve tip to sleeve tip: 55" x 47 1/2", 139.5 cm x 120.5 cm
This lovely and rare indigo dyed cotton garment is a yukata or an unlined, casual kimono.
This splendid and hard-to-find yukata is made from pleated and pole wrapped shibori called arashi, or storm, as the pleated, indigo pattern looks like driving rain.
The arashi shibori is clear and deeply colored: notice some blips and scrunches in the diagonal lines, the result of hand pleating, and, to our eyes, very attractive as it highlights the hand made aspect of this difficult-to-make shibori technique.
The yukata is completely hand stitched and it is in very good, used condition.
This is really lovely article of shibori dyed clothing from old Japan and it is in wonderful condition, ready to wear, to display or to study.
Very recommended.
