This beautiful object is a hand-carved wood block which would have been one of several used in creating a colorful wood block print: each of its two sides is carved.
The design on the front of the block is stark and abstract; the colors are beautifully rich; the "composition" works perfectly with the quality of saturated color seen on this side of the block.
The reverse side shows a blotch of white ink over a cluster of raised markings; a piece of paper is partially glued to the surface.
A really beautiful, enigmatic object that piques the curiosity.
