A Wiry Length of Hemp Kaya: Thick Strands of Hemp Yarn
ca. early twentieth century
66" x 12 1/2", 167.75 cm x 31.5 cm
This is a rustic length of coarse hemp cloth. It is woven from thick and gnarled hand-plied yarns, and because it is such a rustically woven cloth used for kaya or mosquito netting, this laxly woven piece is scratchy to the touch.
The color is a kind of very drab, almost colorless green tone and the overall color is slightly light faded. There is a band of slubby yarns about half-way up the piece--quite curious why they all congregate together in one, localized area.
This is a very good looking, very country kind of hemp cloth, one rich in texture and simple beauty.
