A Very Long (8+ yds/8.5 m) and Narrow Length of Sakiori Cloth: Lots of Shredded Cloth
early to mid twentieth century
28 1/2' x 4 1/2", 8.6 m x 11.5 cm
This is an extremely long (28 1/2 feet or 8.6 meter) and narrow length of rag woven cloth whose two short ends are both unfinished which indicates that it might be a piece taken from an even longer cloth.
The colors are red, black and green and they are all muted by the white warp yarns that unify the color tone.
Aside from the outrageously generous length of this cloth, what makes it interesting to look at is the multitude of small "tails" of shredded weft fiber that appear along the length. This adds to the visual interest of the piece--and it also is a key to understanding how it was made.
Of course because of the unusually long length of the piece it is unclear why it was made, for what purpose. Still, it is something wonderful to ponder and even better to own.
