A Very Large Starched Cotton Shibori Furoshiki: Reconfigured Yukata
mid twentieth century
79" x 65", 201 cm x 165 cm
This is a very large, very vibrantly shibori dyed cotton furoshiki or traditional carrying cloth.
It is interesting because it is most certainly machine stitched from an entire yukata or unlined, cotton kimono that has been taken apart to be reconfigured as a furoshiki. As can be seen in the accompanying detail photographs, the joins of the floral designed shibori cloth sometimes are un-matched which create a lovely, uneven pattern.
As well, the piece is starched which gives it a rough feel: it may have been starched in an attempt to strengthen the cloth.
You will also see some faint stains, hardly noticeable in the overall scheme of things, which are shown in a detail photo that accompanies this post.
A really fun, good-sized piece of old shibori that can be put to any number of uses in the home.
