A Two Sided Hand Stitched Small Mat: Repurposed Cotton and Two Distinct Sides
mid twentieth century
26" x 19", 66 cm x 48.25 cm
This charming cotton cloth is pieced from many different cotton fragments on both its sides, the fracturing of the resist dyed pattern on the face of the cloth--due to the hand stitching or repuporsed pieces--is visually alluring.
The face of the cloth is a commercially loomed blue and white cotton, while the reverse is comprised of soft and worn flannel cottons primarily.
The relatively small size of this two layered cloth suggests that it could have been used for sitting, or perhaps for a baby to lie upon. Whatever its original function, the contrast in the design of the front and back textiles is delightful.
Completely hand stitched and just lovely.
