A Two Panel Boro Panel: Wonderfully Rich Patching
late nineteenth to early twentieth century
62" x 23 3/4", 157/5 cm x 60.5 cm
This is a beautiful, two-panel, indigo dyed cotton boro textile with some eye-dazzling patches and an overall beautiful arrangement of patterns, colors and scale.
The base cloth is an indigo dyed striped cotton and this panel is presumably taken from a futon cover--and the futon cover may have once been a kimono, judging from the piecing together of the striped cloth.
The surface is studded with wonderful patches, about 20 or so in all, some of the most interesting being weft egasuri or picture kasuri indigo dyed cotton pieces that seem to depict the auspicious triad of design motifs, plum, bamboo and pine.
Please note there are pin prick sized-holes and some tears to the cotton base cloth, a natural phenomenon due to its age and its natural wear.
Just beautiful.
