A Taisho Era Child's Fan #3: School Children
ca. 1920s-30s
as shown, entire object: 12" x 9", 30.5 cm x 23 cm
fan:8" x 9", 20 cm x 23 cm
This charming child's fan is made of a bamboo stick onto which is affixed a lightweight, cardboard fan.
The hexagonal-shaped fan paper which is ribbed by split bamboo. It depicts two students, a boy and a girl, both wearing backpacks and apparently happily on their way to school. Being that this fan was made in the 1930s, Japanese nationalism can easily be seen by the boy carrying the Japanese flag in his right hand.
In good condition, this lovely and delicate object wonderfully captions an idealized slice of life in Taisho era Japan.
