A Short Roll of Rustic Hemp Kaya: Wonderful Indigo Dyed Yarns
ca. early twentieth century
3 yards x 12 1/4", 2.74 m x 31 cm
Apologies for the poor photos on this post: the actual roll of hand plied, hand woven, indigo dyed hemp mesh cloth is really beautifully rustic and heavily textured which is hard to see in the lead-in photo. And the color of the hemp mesh is a deep, rich, warm indigo blue which may also get lost when perusing the attached photos.
The hemp fibers are tough and wiry, so much so that not all of them drank in the indigo dye evenly, which results in seeing some strands which are tougher than others, and left partially undyed. Down one side of the cloth is a crease, evidence of it having been used.
And there is ample cloth to be had here, exactly three yards or just under three meters.
The hemp mesh is beautifully heavy and drapey in the hand, and is of a beautiful color and texture.
Really lovely.
