A Short Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Roundels

$45.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
23" x 13", 58.5 cm x 33 cm

This is a short length of indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth and one that depicts a fairly regularly-seen motif, that of stylized chrysanthemums amid a field of trailing vine or arabesque.

The indigo is a bit steely blue-grey in tone and somewhat faded.

There are some ocher toned highlights, also faded but very much in keeping with the faded indigo.

Interesting to note is that the pattern on this length is as clear on the front as it is on the back which indicates that it was stencil resisted on both its sides.

A length of katazome cotton with good age and showing a lovely, traditional pattern.
