A Shibori Diaper: Large Dip Dyed Spiderwebs
mid twentieth century
29" x 13 1/4", 73.5 cm x 33.5 cm
This lightweight cotton cloth is a traditional, Japanese diaper and is dyed in the kumo shibori method which basically translates to "spiderweb" shibori. This particular diaper, is hand stitched together to form a "tube" and the above noted dimensions reflect the size of the piece as shown. Were the tube undone, the length would be twice what is noted.
To create the shibori pattern, the cotton would have been tied and dyed, and the large, isolated "spiderwebs" in such good, clear color make this is a beautiful length of cloth.
The shibori is quite clear and the cotton is quite white, and this is a boldly designed, utilitarian cloth that is highly visually appealing.
Really lovely.
