A Shibori Diaper: Crowded Kumo Shibori
mid twentieth century
24 1/4" x 12 3/4", 61.5 cm x 32.5 cm
This lightweight cotton cloth is a traditional, Japanese diaper and is dyed in the kumo shibori method which basically translates to "spiderweb" shibori. This particular diaper, is hand stitched together to form a "tube" and the above noted dimensions reflect the size of the piece as shown. Were the tube undone, the length would be twice what is noted.
To create the shibori pattern, the cotton would have been tied and dyed, and the crowded field of "spiderwebs" in such good, clear color make this is a beautiful length of old cloth.
The shibori is quite clear and the cotton is quite white, which may not be apparent when viewing the color on the photos attached.
Really lovely.
