A Sakiori Obi: Checkerboard Effect
ca. mid twentieth century
104" x 5 3/4", 264 cm x 14.5 cm
This is a sakiori obi, or a rustic, traditional kimono sash that is woven using shredded cloth as its weft yarn.
The warp yarns are of red and white cotton and the weft yarns are variegated colors of purple, green, orange, etc., but these weft yarns are only able to be seen on the selvedges since the warp yarns conceal their color.
The checkerboard effect which is so striking on this obi changes its design about 1/3 up the length of the sash.
This very handsome obi is in good, used condition with very little show of wear, and a good, rustic hand.
A beautiful, folk textile.
