A Rustic Undyed Hemp Han Juban: One Narrow Line of Indigo Cotton
early twentieth century
24 3/4" x 24", 63 m x 61 cm
Some of the most potently beautiful country textiles are the most subtle in appearance--and this can be said of this hand woven hemp han juban or half under-kimono.
It is roughly woven of what appears to be hand plied hemp yarn. It is interesting to imagine that a garment as scratchy and textured as this one is was worn as underwear but in a culture where cotton came late and was often scarce this kind of bast fiber clothing was the norm.
It is beautiful for its undyed, natural color and for being hand woven.
The amazingly nuanced detail on the proper, left, back of the han juban--the two single and stray rows of indigo cotton weft yarns--adds a massive appeal to this humble garment.
The surface is rough from wear and there are snags, small tears and some abrasion.
It is a gorgeous thing, a really quiet but powerful country textile.
