A Rustic, Maize-Toned Obi: Sakiori
ca. mid twentieth century
102" x 5 1/2", 259 cm x 14 cm
This is a richly colored and woven sakiori obi, or a rustic, traditional kimono sash that is woven using shredded cloth as its weft yarn.
The warp yarns on this obi are a maize yellow primarily, with narrow, wide-spaced stripes of a soft, red-purple. This yellow warp creates a depth of color and casts a warm tone to the entire rag woven obi. The weft yarns are fed in regularly spaced blocks of black, red, orange and grey.
This hand woven sakiori obi is in very good condition, with no visible stains or holes, and it is a very handsome example of a traditional, sakiori weaving.
A beautifully colored, beautifully woven folk textile.
