A Richly Colored Rustically Woven Obi: Sakiori-like
mid twentieth century
108" x 7 1/2", 274.5 cm x 19 cm
This rustic obi gives the impression that it is sakiori or ragweave, but in actual fact is seems to be woven from a indigo dyed cotton warp with what appears to be weft material that is thick cotton and woolen yarns.
The black colored cotton warp gives the overall color scheme a rich tone. The weft is fed in blocks of moss, black, brown and purple, creating a striped pattern up the length of the obi. In between the color blocks is a horizontal line of blue and white which creates a shimmering effect to the weave.
The overall visual result is a fairly uniform, striped design rendered in handsome colors.
The condition is good and used and there seems to be very little damage or wear to this piece. You will note a vertical crease all the way down the center of the obi which is the result of the sash being folded in half before being worn.
Just lovely.
