A Playfully Piece Constructed Komebukuro: Drawstring Bag

$75.00 USD

mid twentieth century
8 1/2" x 8" x 8", 21.5 cm x 20.25 cm x 20.25 cm

This beautifully pieced drawstring bag is hand sewn from about 25 pieces of old Japanese cloth fragments, which are a mixture of handloomed cottons and commercially produced cotton flannel

This kind of piece-constructed, drawstring bag is often referred to as a komebukuro.

Komebukuro
are bags that were used to bring token offerings of uncooked rice or beans to a temple or shrine festival, the piecing and patching often being thought-out and planned, for festive effect.

A marvelous bag, it is one that shows a really good range of vintage fabrics; the bag is entirely lined in undyed cotton. The drawstring is made of twisted, orange-dyed cotton, probably original to the bag.

Very recommended.
