A Pieced Length of Kurume Kasuri: Misaligned
early to mid twentieth century
40" x 12 3/4", 101.5 cm x 32 cm
This charming short length of reconfigured cloth is hand stitched from four pieces, the three kasuri pieces were more than likely woven in Kurume which produced boldly geometric patterns as are seen on this length.
A charming detail of this piece lies in the way the regular repeat is misaligned when the pieces are stitched together without regard for keeping the pattern as it was meant to be. The striped patch on the top, left, adds further visual interest.
A fun, lighthearted length of old indigo dyed cotton and one that provides great visual enjoyment, this piece can be admired as art or can be used in the home.
