A Patched Length of Blue on Blue Dyed Cotton: Checks

$75.00 USD

early twentieth century
43" x 13", 109 cm x 33 cm

This is a length of simply designed and boldly patterned woven plaid cloth in two tones of indigo, medium and dark.

The length was taken from a futon cover which, when seen in total, must have been alluring to the eyes for its graphic appeal, and here we have a short fragment from the futon cover which bears a mending patch that is of almost the same tone as the base cloth.

Plaid cloth was woven in countless variation in old Japan and it is a type of cloth that might not seem very "Japanese" in spirit, but it is. Here have a look at plaids as they appear in ukiyo-e prints from a century or two ago.

This length is in good, used condition.
