A Paper Weft Rustic Obi: Silky Warp Yarns
$95.00 USD
mid twentieth century
112" x 6 1/2", 284 cm x 16.5 cm
This subtle, dark-colored checked obi is a traditional kimono sash. It is woven from what appears to be a silk or rayon warp and (possibly) commercially produced paper yarns. More than likely this obi was woven in the mid twentieth century.
Because of the silky yarns that are used as warp material the obi gives off a satiny sheen and its surface is slick.
As is the case with cloth woven with a paper weft, this one is extremely light in the hand.
Unusual and lovely.
