A Multi-Colored Sakiori Obi: Rustic Texture
early to mid twentieth century
106" x 5 1/8", 269 cm x 13 cm
Shown here is a sakiori obi, which is a traditional kimono sash that has been woven from a weft of shredded, recycled cloth.
The warp yarns are fine cotton and alternate between a coral and black color.
The weft rag yarns are in a good variety of colors, some mottled, some plain in color and tone. The weft yarns are fed in narrow bands of differing colors which gives a lovely variegated quality to the kimono sash.
The light tones seem to have a pinkish or coral cast to them which might indicate some kind of color fading when (or if) this obi was washed.
A beautifully toned sakiori obi in good, used condition appropriate with its age.
Very nice.
