A Long Panel of Kasuri Cotton: Carp and Geometry
early twentieth century
78" x 12 3/4", 198 cm x 32.5 cm
This is quite a generously-sized length of kasuri dyed cotton whose design is based on a regularly-spaced grid. Inside the grid we see regularly alternating images of carp and a geometric design.
The length is hand stitched from two pieces and it is in good, used condition. The carp are very well rendered in kasuri yarns, the way they occupy the square it is contained by is a well-conceived design.
The indigo tone is deep, almost black. The cloth is drapey in the hand and the color tones are still rich, as is the design.
This is a really wonderful length of old kasuri cotton with a rich design that is well executed.
