A Long Cotton Boro Panel: Messy and Wonderful
ca. late nineteenth century
72" x 19 1/2", 183 cm x 49.5 cm
This is a tall and free form length of very old cottons which have been stitched together in what can only be called a "rustic" fashion.
Bold, quick white cotton stitching holds together more than twenty pieces of old cotton, all of which appears to be hand woven and dyed in botanically derived dyestuffs.
Of note is a very interesting piece of old cotton, to be seen at the top, right of this textile. It is a nineteenth century fragment that shows stripes which are woven as a kind of basketweave or sankuzushi, a tremendously handsome type of old Japanese cloth.
Recommended--for the adventurous.
