A Long and Beautifully Patched Mosquito Net Length: Boro
early twentieth century
106" x 13", 269 cm x 33 cm
This handsome piece of beautifully patched hemp and cotton mosquito netting is very long and beautiful for its color and repair.
It is a length of kaya or mosquito netting: the warp yarns are a deep toned indigo cotton and the weft yarns are hemp. The resulting color is a warm, rich blue/green that shows a good texture and slightly loose weave.
The piece shows about 8 patches in all, seven of which are concentrated on the ends of the very long piece and are beautifully rustic in their age, application and wear. There are triangular-shaped figured cotton patches on the bottoms of this length which would have been placed at the corner tops of the mosquito net tent when it was intact. This length is one section from a mosquito net.
This is an exceptionally lovely piece of old, hand woven hemp and cotton cloth with good length, color and structure.
