A Length of Weft Based Kasuri: Rustic Peonies and Stripes

$80.00 USD

early twentieth century
49" x 13", 124.5 cm x 33 cm

What a wonderful length of rustic indigo dyed cotton kasuri. As is very clear from the photos seen here there are beautiful, linear depictions of simply rendered peonies set against ochre toned warp-oriented stripes.

There are three full peonies depicted using weft yarns. Two are partially shown: note that the peony fragment on top is a fragment due to the length being cut; the almost-full peony in the center of the cloth is only partially woven into the cloth, a curious and wonderful detail.

The length is an almost black tone of indigo. The selvedges are uneven in a very nice, tactile way which indicates this might be hand woven. There is a lentil-sized hole and some surface wear to the piece which is consistent with its age and its lifetime of use.

Super delightful and beautifully rustic this is a desirable length of old kasuri woven cotton.
