A Length of Two Tone Shibori: Tatewaku and White Blocks
early to mid twentieth century
53" x 13", 134.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a lovely length of indigo dyed cotton shibori that was once part of a yukata or a casual, unlined summer kimono.
Because of this there are ingrained creases that are impressed onto the piece from its time as a yukata. As well there is a snag to the cloth which can be seen on the last detail photo here.
The length shows two tones of blue and the predominant design is that of undulating, parallel lines called tatewaku, sometimes referred to as rising steam.
Set inside this pattern are undyed squares which offer an interesting foil to the undulating, vertical lines.
A really attractive length of indigo dyed cotton shibori, this one has a delightful and slightly unusual pattern.
