A Length of Two Plaids: Zanshi Ori
early to mid twentieth century
70 1/2" x 13 1/2", 179 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of two joined cotton pieces: the top piece is brightly colored showing yellow and black. It is hand stitched to a more subtly colored plaid cloth which is in part woven from leftover yarns. Leftover yarn weaving is known as zanshi ori.
The contrast between the two pieces is jarring and the length of zanshi ori of itself is very attractive. There is at least one snag or small hole near the selvedge of the zanshi ori section but otherwise the length is in good, used condition.
Of good size and of good color and quality, this length of old plaid cotton is wonderful for its contrast and for its intrinsically good weaving.
