A Length of Taiten Shibori: Drapey Hand
mid twentieth century
44 1/2" x 13 3/4", 113 cm x 35 cm
Taiten shibori is a type of shibori where the length of cloth is compressed along a series of stiff warp yarns before it is dyed.
The result of this process is as you see here: a series of small, regularly spaced blips of indigo that dot the entire length of this lightweight cotton, which was taken from a yukata or an unlined, casual kimono.
This length of taiten shibori shows some ingrained creases from its time as a kimono and some very faint light fading to vertically-oriented zones, especially on the right hand side.
A wonderful length of taiten shibori cloth in a classic, straightforward pattern.
