A Length of Taiten Shibori: Drapey and Supple
mid twentieth century
55 1/2" x 14", 139.5 cm x 35.5 cm
Taiten shibori is a type of shibori where the length of cloth is compressed along a series of stiff warp yarns before it is dyed.
The result of this process is as you see here: a series of small, regularly spaced blips of indigo that dot the entire length of this lightweight cotton, which was taken from a yukata or an unlined, casual kimono.
This length of taiten shibori shows some ingrained creases from its time as a kimono as well as some very faint bands of fading, super subtle and extremely hard to see.
A wonderful length of taiten shibori cloth in a classic, straightforward pattern, the cloth is lightweight, fairly loosely woven and very supple in the hand.
