A Length of Striped, Kasuri Cotton: Beautiful Colors
early to mid twentieth century
38 1/2" x 12 3/4", 98 cm x 32.5 cm
This short length of hand woven, indigo dyed cotton is beautiful. It is combination of wide, complex striped cloth over which is layered white, weft-directional kasuri or ikat geometric patterns.
This cloth was taken from a futon cover and it was used hard as can be seen by the snags to the cloth shown in the accompanying photographs.
The color is just beautiful: pale blue-green with brick and dark indigo blue make a soft and rich color combination.
The patterns as they lay over the stripes is inspired design, and it is this kind of wonderfully sophisticated surprise that makes Japanese folk textiles the enduring source of visual pleasure they are.
