A Length of Patched Rustic, Hand Woven Cotton: Beautiful Hand Spun Yarns
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
60" x 13 1/4", 152.5 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a simply beautiful length of old hand woven, indigo dyed cloth that is woven from thick, hand spun cotton yarns. This rustic, old cotton cloth is what you hope to find when you are looking for Japanese folk textiles: it has what the Japanese call "thread flavor" or ito aji and its pattern is beguilingly simple and sophisticated at the same time.
The cloth is thicker than you may expect and it drapes nicely. Its color is good and its condition is good for its substantial age. As can be seen in the accompanying detail photographs, there are about five cotton patches on the surface of the cloth, each in lovely contrast to the base.
Please have a look at the zoomed-in detail photos shown here in order to see the beautifully complex structure of the cloth and to enjoy seeing the components of its rustic beauty.
