A Length of Resist Dyed Indigo Cotton: Three Family Crests

$90.00 USD

early twentieth century
90" x 12 3/4", 228.5 cm x 32.5 cm

This very long piece of hand spun, hand woven indigo dyed cotton show three resist dyed family crests.

The cotton fabric is wonderfully textured in the way that only hand spun, hand woven cotton can be: as the Japanese say it contains "thread flavor."

As can be seen by the accompanying detail photos there is some scuffing and minor loss to the indigo dyed cotton, most noticeable above the centrally placed crest and  the detail photos aim to document this aspect of the cloth.

By looking at the seams on this length it appears that this was once part of a futon cover. If not a futon cover then perhaps it could have been a panel from a yutan or furniture cover but this is not clear.

The length is in good, used condition with some minor damage as described above.

A long piece of old cloth that has the potential for many applications: it is versatile and has graphic appeal.
