A Length of Resist Dyed Hemp or Ramie Cloth: Large Scale Design

This is a panel of hemp or ramie cloth taken from a futon cover that has been resist dyed in a large repeat. The color of the cloth--the light blue indigo tone--is referred to as asagi in Japan. Those who dye or those who dye indigo know how difficult it is to achieve such a pale tone that is as even in value as this one is.

The top portion shows a motif of swirling or moving water. The bottom shows a split bamboo fence. The dots indicate some sort of play of water or so it seems.

The abstraction or stylization of these motifs is entrancing as are the "zones" that each of the motifs occupy on this length.

This panel shows some slight staining and discoloration, hardly noticeable in person but shown here in detail for good measure.
