A Length of Pieced Kasuri Cotton: Money Pouches and Folding Fans
late nineteenth century
56" x 13", 142 cm x 33 cm
This length of hand woven, hand spun cotton cloth is composed of three pieces that are hand stitched together and it shows a repeat pattern of money pouches and folding fans.
It would seem likely that this panel was taken from a futon cover that was part of a bridal trousseau: the iconography of the images is potent for a newly married couple.
Obviously money bags symbolize a wish for prosperity while the folding fan--a Japanese invention--suggests the opening of things, like a new relationship.
The top part that is formed from two pieces is narrower than the rest of the length and their is a patina from wear.
The weft-based images are beautifully realized and their large scale has charm.
