A Length of Pictorial Shibori: Water Plantain
mid twentieth century
61" x 14", 155 cm x 35.5 cm
This is a length of stitched indigo dyed shibori which was taken from a yukata: it shows a watery scene with a lovely, dappled water surface and a repeat of the omodaka or water plantain which is identified by its distinctive, three-pointed leaf.
The cotton is lightweight and is power loomed; there are ingrained creases from this panel's former life as part of a yukata and there are other creases, also ingrained, from the shibori processes used to create the pattern on the cloth.
The color is deeply indigo and the unusual, repeated motif is delightful.
A good length of vintage shibori.
