A Length of Patched Striped Cotton: Hand Spun Yarns
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
60" x 13 3/4", 152.5 cm x 35 cm
This is a length of hand woven, hand spun cotton cloth that is designed in wide bars of tonally contrasting vertical stripes: the tones are pale and deep blue, alternately.
The feel of the cloth is most definitely hand woven and the indigo is certainly botanically derived. There are three patches in total, two solid color indigo ones at the top of the length and a small patch below. There is a small notched loss on the selvedge of the length which is obvious and seen on the accompanying detail photo.
A handsome and simply designed length of cotton, this was undoubtedly taken from a futon cover, probably from the Meiji era (1868-1912).
