A Length of Over Dyed Indigo Katazome: Origami Cranes and Hand Spun Cotton
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
58" x 12 3/4", 147.5 cm x 32.25 cm
This is a nicely textured length of hand woven, hand spun cotton that is katazome dyed with an interesting pattern representing stylized, woven cypress fencing as a background to origami cranes.
The cranes are small in relation to the geometric background which makes it curious and interesting in terms of scale. The color is a kind of cool but rich green, the result of over dyeing indigo with a yellow dye.
The cloth is in good, used condition and this kind of pattern which is both pictorial and abstract at the same time is a joy to look at.
Really lovely and rare to see--and beautifully hand woven from hand spun yarns.
