A Length of Northern Shibori: Stark Images, Deep Indigo

$70.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
28" x 12 3/4", 71 cm x 32.5 cm

This length of boldly designed and well-executed indigo dyed shibori seems to be of the type made in Japan's rural northeastern region called Tohoku. More than likely this length was made in what is now Akita prefecture.

Clearly this piece is from a larger length that showed a repeat of the two images resist dyed onto this piece. At the top seems to be a fantasy depiction of woven, young bamboo and beneath it are floral forms.

The cotton is of good quality and it is old although it is not clear if it is hand woven. The resisted designs show light traces of ingrained dirt that seems to be there to stay as this piece was washed well after it was acquired.

Still this is a beautifully rustic piece of old shibori with nice, dark color and a curious and unusual design. One small hole shown on the accompanying detail photo.

Wonderful.
