A Length of Nagoya Sarasa: Stylized Wood Sorrel

$60.00 USD

mid twentieth century
37" x 13 3/4", 94 cm x 35 cm

This is a beautifully designed length of cotton of a type referred to as Nagoya sarasa, an indication that its design makes reference to Indian trade cloth, even if this reference is oblique.

The design of the pattern is large in scale and sprawls over the surface of the cotton. The design depicts clusters of stylized wood sorrel against a background of crowded, thickly drawn karakusa or arabesque.

The color palette is earthy and unusual and the length is unusual in its design but also somehow ingenious in the way that only the Japanese can do.

An interesting length of cloth, probably dating to the 1930s or 40s.
