A Length of Missing Warp Egasuri: Cherry Blossoms and Drums

$65.00 USD

early twentieth century
33 1/4" x 12 3/4", 84.5 cm x 32.5 cm

What a charming and highly unusual pattern on this length of kasuri dyed cotton.

The pattern is a playful, springtime one that shows a repeat pattern of joyfully rendered cherry blossoms that repeat with the image of a hand held drum of the type used in musical performances.  It seems the visual message of this piece was intended to conjure the happy spirit of spring since we see cherry blossoms--and the drum calls to mind celebrations probably related to spring and its sense of renewal.

The cloth is faded and oxidized; the indigo tone has gone a bit grey and there is overall fading to the length. It is woven in an interesting way as some of the warp yarns are intentionally missing. This gives this length a feeling of lightness which works nicely with the woven, jubilant image.

Please note one area that is tucked and stitched and shown on the detail photo here.

Beautiful and unusual.
