A Length of Large Scale Patterned Katazome Cotton: Tortoises and Chrysanthemums

$95.00 USD

early twentieth century
60 1/2" x 13 1/4", 153.5 cm x 33.5 cm

This is a boldly designed length of katazome dyed cotton that shows large-scale tortoises which are shown as roundels in front of a background of large, "explosive" chrysanthemums.

The repeat pattern is not only interesting to look at there is meaning in it, too: as is quite well known the tortoise image is a symbol which conveys a wish for a long life.

Very often during the Meiji period (1868-1912) elaborate bridal trousseaux were offered at the time of marriage. As such such items in the trousseau were imprinted with auspicious designs as a way to bless the new couple and their future together. This panel was taken from a futon cover which more than likely was one component of a larger set of wedding gifts.

The indigo dye reads as black so the pattern is vibrant because of the stark contrast between "black" and white.

The condition overall is used but quite good with the pattern rich from the sharpness of the "black" and white.
