A Length of Kumanozome: Distinctive Moire Patterned Cotton
late nineteenth century
63 3/4" x 13", 164.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a generously sized length of a wonderful old type of stenciled cotton known as Kumanozome.
Kumanozome refers to a place of origin, an area near present-day Okayama Prefecture: Kumano is well-known for producing this type of optically entrancing cloth.
Kumanozome is immediately recognizable for its decidedly "Op Art" moire effect of undulating, crossing lines. Sometimes contrasting colors and values were used to heighten this effect as is this one which is dyed in red and indigo toned dyes.
This good-sized was taken from a futon cover. There are about three small-but-noticeable holes (shown here in detail). As can also be seen and expected, the cloth is slightly faded from wear and its surface has slight, overall abrasion which has softened the original colors of red and blue from bold to gentle.
A lovely, collectible piece of distinctly dyed cotton from old Japan in good, used condition.
