A Length of Katazome Dyed Roundels and Arabesques: Medium Blue
early twentieth century
53" x 12", 134.5 cm x 30.5 cm
This is a length of lightly starched katazome dyed cotton cloth that has been stitched together from two separate pieces.
The stencil resist dyed pattern is a fairly large repeat of roundels--probably showing the Chinese bell flower--against a ground of linear arabesques.
There is one hand stitched patch applied to the seam of the cloth; the color is a warm, medium-toned indigo, just lovely.
The cotton is of good quality and appears to be hand loomed and the overall feeling imparted from this length of cotton cloth is a light hearted one as there is a buoyancy and charm to the design.
Lovely.
